ACL injuries

This is Dr. Sinha from STAR Orthopaedics.  I am often asked if it is necessary to repair a torn ACL ligament.  The short answer is:  it depends.

The ACL is one of the four main ligaments within the knee that connect the femur to the tibia.

The ACL prevents the shinbone from sliding out in front of the thigh bone, as well as providing rotational stability to the knee.

Whether you decide to fix the ACL tear depends upon how stable the knee is after the injury and full rehabilitation.

IF the knee feels unstable, patients usually require reconstruction to  be able to return to cutting and pivoting sports.

Another reason to reconstruct an unstable knee is to prevent new injuries to the cartilage and meniscus.

If the knee feels stable with sports, more common in older middle aged patients because we are less aggressive on the field, then a brace may be all that is necessary.
