rehabilitation

Rehabilitation may be prescribed as part of your recovery program. This could include exercises targeted at the precise area that was impacted, physical therapy or working with a physiatrist. Physiatry is physical medicine and rehabilitation. The practice includes integrated care of all neurologic and musculoskeletal disorders.

One or all of the above may be incorporated into your treatment. As an example, a patient who has undergone arthroscopic surgery on the knee may receive a plan like this:

Exercises:

  • Ankle pumps: While lying or sitting, pump your ankle up, down and around in circles several times per hour. This aids in regaining a good blood flow to your leg.
  • Toe raises: Gently rock up to your toes and back down to the heel while standing in a balanced position. Perform three sets of twenty of these each day.
  • Straight Leg Raises: While lying on your back, bend the good knee and place that foot on the floor. Lift your other leg 1 to 1.5 feet off the ground. Hold for three to five seconds and lower the leg. Perform three sets of twenty of these each day.

Physical Therapy:

Make an appointment with a physical therapist or a physiatrist. Working with your Star Ortho surgeon, these professionals will treat the knee directly and precisely, managing any pain, strengthening the knee and working to regain flexibility in the joint.

No matter what your orthopedic situation entails, at Star Ortho, you will be cared for in an empathetic, compassionate and effective manner designed to create the best recovery possible.
